The protagonist of the story is a mermaid princess, the youngest daughter of the ruler of the seas, who falls in love with a human prince. It was first published in 1837 in the first volume of Andersen's Fairy Tales Told to Children, which also contained " The Tinderbox", " The Princess and the Pea", " The Emperor's New Clothes" and " Thumbelina". "The Little Mermaid" (Danish: "Den lille Havfrue") is a romantic fantasy story for children by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen.
